The Hungry Girls and Other Stories |
|||
| Hailed by French critic Marc Chénetier as a "bestiary unequaled by any other imagination I know," Ms. Eakins's 1988 collection, The Hungry Girls and Other Stories, was warmly praised even before publication, and has continued to generate interest among the discerning. (You can read a segment yourself to see why.)
The first edition (with an afterword by Paul Violi and illustrations by Judy Sohigian) was published by Cadmus Editions to enthusiastic reviews from the critics. Though it is now out of print, you can very likely locate a copy through the links on the Fabularetail page on this site. |

In August of 1997, the title story was presented as an Off-Broadway play, The Hungry Girls: A Fairy Tale, conceived and adapted by Stephanie Gilman and Kristin Tanzer. (The photo and poster shown at left were by Diane Bonder.) Paul Sills, founder of Second City and Story Theater, said the production was "formidable ... amazing ... remarkable."
The production was reprised on August 19-30 at the 1998 New York International Fringe Festival at the Kraine Theater, in the East Village. The Village Voice called it "Adventurous and tuned-in," a "Rabelaisian freak-out on bingeing, chomping, and rolling in dirt. This theater celebrates and makes a spook show of the appetites that pump females and trigger anorexia girls fearing they will eat the world." (1 Sept 1998) |

| You can get a sense of the production in an online gallery of more than twenty photos taken by photographer (and poet) Su Polo. | |||
| Or, if you have a QuickTime plug-in installed on your computer (or if you wish to install it now from Apple's Web site), you can view some sample video clips from the 1997 production just click on one of the images to the right. (Please note: The files are large they average a megabyte and will probably take a few minutes to download. If you choose to download one, it will pop up a separate window; shrink that window and let the file load. Then you can explore other pages and view the QT clip when it's ready.) |
